Over a dozen people were killed by flash floods in the KwaZulu-Natal province's little town of Ladysmith, South African officials reported on Saturday.

"As of Friday, December 29, 2023, twenty-one bodies have been recovered," Colonel Robert Netshiunda, a spokesman for the police, stated.

Around 1400 homes were destroyed by the town's Christmas Day floodwaters, and he claimed that there are still unaccounted-for deaths and that the death toll is certain to go up.

According to Netshiunda, search and rescue personnel have been searching rivers for bodies. It is anticipated that the operation will go on all weekend.

One Ladysmith family was about to bury seven of its members when tragedy struck their vehicle was washed into the river by floodwaters.

Earlier this week, Vincent Msimango, his wife, two children, brother, niece, and nephew were found dead by rescue personnel, according to a story released on Saturday by the local news source Eyewitness News.

The province of KwaZulu-Nata has recently seen terrible floods. In and around the city of Durban in June, torrential rains caused deluges that claimed the lives of seven individuals and left another seven missing. Devastating floods struck the coastal region in April of last year, resulting in the deaths of over 440 people.
